Rens Willems werkt bij IOB aan studies op het gebied van veiligheid, rechtsorde, stabiliteit, humanitaire hulp en contraterrorisme. Hij is gepromoveerd aan de Universiteit Utrecht op onderzoek naar veiligheid, rechtsorde en interventies in fragiele staten. Hij deed onder meer onderzoek in Zuid-Soedan, Democratische Republiek Congo en Burundi.
